Year 6 SATS are changing.
The new National Curriculum will be assessed for the first time in May 2016 and there is a whole new paper – the Arithmetic Paper for Year 6 SATS – 2016
Paper 1 will be an arithmetic paper where the questions will be context free; in other words no word problems, just calculations. The test will assess number, calculations and fractions (which includes decimals and percentages).
Children will be expected to use formal written methods to solve arithmetic questions, including long multiplication and long division. For such questions there will be two marks; one mark may be awarded if an appropriate method is used but the final answer is incorrect. The paper will only be 30 minutes long, so children will need to work quickly and accurately.

Here’s a copy of the sample questions, mark schemes and commentary for 2016 assessments. It might be useful to work through and I’ll be adding more detail in the next few weeks.
In the meantime many of the methods are featured in my YouTube channel. The good news is that the more rigorous, scalable methods you and I were taught, are now back in fashion. It won’t be long before I break out my corduroy trousers!
