Solving equations is a foundational algebra skill, and there a few methods currently taught. The equations can get more challenging, so it’s useful to ensure that your method is robust and scaleable.
Here’s the questions:
a. x + 3 = 15
b. x – 4 = 12
c. 2x = 24
d. x – 12 = 15
e. x/2 – 3 = 9
f. 4x + 4 = 20
g. 5x + 3 = 2x + 9
h. 6x – 1 = 15 + 2x
i. 3(x + 2) = x + 4
j. 2(x – 1) = 6(2x + 2)
k. 10 – 2x = x – 6
l. 8x + 18 = 2x + 26
m. 10x – 19 = 7x – 14
n. 2x + 10 = 6x – 22
These types of questions appear in all the main GCSE exam boards – Edexcel, AQA, OCR and Educas – and are fairly common for non calculator papers.
Top Tips!
- Always work methodically and show your working
- Check your calculations
- Is it a reasonable answer?
