This video is an example of answering a question using the sine rule:
“Joe has a field in the form of a triangle ABC, with dimensions as shown.
(a) Calculate length AB
(b) Calculate the area of the field”
The question is aimed at around grade 7 and the topic appears in all the main examination boards, including Edexcel, AQA and OCR. The sine rule is fairly popular and, like this question, might also ask about calculating the area of a triangle. At this level some questions may also involve pythagoras or using the cosine rule.
The main thing to remember is that the sine rule usually involves triangles (or the ability to make them) and, unfortunately, you don’t always get much indication of the method required. It can sometimes be a little bit of ‘trial and error’ …. although, for sine rule, you will need sides and opposite angles.
Here’s an example that appeared on a recent GCSE paper (question 17).
Please do stop the video, try the question and compare your solution.
